tinker, tailor, soldier, spy

it has been about a month since i posted. sorry! in that time i have met david cameron, finished an article, stepped on the toes of bob geldof, seen some fanatasic music, applied for an IHS fellowship, had two in-studios for the radio station, joined a gym with a great pool, attended several libertarian events, and read more and more for my phd.

today there was an alert about radiation poisoning that caused the death of a former russian spy. i know that the cold war is over, but i think that the war on terrorism (whatever does that really mean?!) will be fought on several fronts. never underestimate Russia ....

fear and loathing of the NHS

today i went to Guy's Hospital in order to get blood drawn. this was the first time in the year that i have lived here that i had to let someone outside of my normal american doctors treat me. let me tell you it was not the best experience.

the NHS is socialised medicine at its worst. the hospitals are dingy and dirty and the staff often look like they work at a cafe and not a medical facility. i approached the hemotology lab today and nearly cried. i am used to going to stanford where everything is clean and sterile and welcoming. the lab was, at best, a snapshot of what my high school biology lab looked like. when i asked how long the results would take the lab technician said a week. i nearly fell over. a week? i could be dead in a week - and in fact a woman did die yesterday from a severe allergic reaction due to the fact that her test results would not be ready for a while.

when i am home in the US i pay for all of my doctor visits and health care appointments. the risk of getting an infection in the UK - which does happen quite frequently - as a result of being cared for at an NHS is not worth the cost of $1000 which, last year, covered my annual exam, a visit to my allergist, a visit to my psychiatrist, and a visit to a therapist. it is worth every penny.
